Santa Bárbara de Nexe group raises money to fight cancer

Recently, a group of concerned residents of the Santa Bárbara de Nexe community held their annual Macmillan coffee morning and raised €2,300 to help fight cancer.

Organised by Julie Ancell and her generous and dedicated group of helpers, the well-attended auction featured a sumptuous breakfast of homemade delights. The popular event was hosted by Quinta das Borboletas Restaurant in Almancil.

The informal group calls themselves “SMILE” and seem to enjoy raising money for worthy local causes, while experiencing a positive sense of community.

SMILE met once again at Quinta das Borboletas in order to support the local Madrugada charity by presenting a cheque for €1,150. The donation was accepted by Bobbie Waters (on behalf of Madrugada), who expressed how appreciative she was and impressed by the success of group’s efforts. The other half of the money has been forwarded to Macmillan UK to help with their efforts to fight cancer.

The cheque was presented by Debbie Loasby, a leader of the group. Also in attendance was Doug Fury, the husband of the late beloved Linda Fury, who was one of the original inspirations for the SMILE movement before she passed away.
