A two million euro project to replenish sand at Dona Ana beach in Lagos has started, aimed at protecting the cliffs from sea erosion.
According to Lagos Câmara, this work is due to last for three months and started with the assembly of a 400 metre tube at Meia Praia, which was then transported by sea to Praia Dona Ana where it will feed the beach with sand.
During the work, the car parking area by the beach will be reduced and the bus service will pick up and drop off passengers at the roundabout before the car park.
After the initial preparation works are complete, a retention structure will be built at the extreme northern edge of the beach and cliff before more than 140 cubic metres of sand is pumped onto the beach, extending it by 40 metres.
A statement from Lagos Câmara said: “This work is vital for the protection of the sea front and security of everyone who uses this beach.”
