Sampaio marks Dia da República

news: Sampaio marks Dia da República

Lisbon became a sea of people last Tuesday, when crowds swarmed to the city to celebrate the 94th Republic Day. The anniversary commemorates the founding of the Republic in 1910 when Manuel, the surviving son of King Carlos 1 of Portugal, was forced to abdicate and leave the country.

Sampaio presided over the ceremonies, including the hoisting of the national flag and a parade by the guard of honour at Praça do Municipio. Military chiefs, local dignitaries and star athletes, including Olympic medallists Francis Obikwelo and Rui Silva, also attended the festivities.

Several other events were laid on by Lisbon Câmara, including an athletics race that featured 1,000 children from primary schools in Lisbon. The race began in Praça do Rossio and continued via Rua do Ouro and Rua do Arsenal.
