Sampaio backs UN

Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio has reiterated his belief that the United Nations should be central to resolving the Iraqi issue, as this is the only way out of the current chaos. Sampaio made the remarks while addressing a ceremony commemorating the 30th anniversary of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution. “Achieving peace and security in Iraq through politically legal means is the top priority at present and the United Nations should play a key role,” said the President, noting he was unable to find any other effective way forward. He went on to say that any attempt to achieve an immediate military victory in Iraq would only lead to further instability in the country and undermine its national cohesion.
