Irishman Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick Step) won the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve cycling competition yesterday, beating Danny Van Poppel (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) and Jon Aberasturi (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) who finished second and third.
The 189.5km stage started in Lagos and ended in Portimão. Today, the race continues from Sagres to Fóia in Monchique.
