Vilamoura will provide the setting for sailors seeking Olympic qualification
This Wednesday (November 8) marks the start of the 2023 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra 17 European Championships, which are being held until November 13 in Vilamoura and are described as “one of the most important international sailing events.”
Around 400 sailors from 34 countries have travelled to the Algarve alongside nearly 100 coaches and many other staff linked to the events.
The opening ceremony was held on Tuesday (November 7) at the Vilamoura Marina and attended by representatives from Loulé Council, the Portuguese Sports and Youth Institute (IPDJ), Vilamoura Marina, Portuguese Sailing Federation and Vilamoura Sailing, which organises the championships.
As the organiser explains, these European Championships will serve as qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics, making the 18 planned regattas even more competitive.
“It is the first time that Portugal hosts an Olympic qualification event for three classes at the same time,” Vilamoura Sailing adds.
The regattas on the last three days of the championships (November 11-13) will be streamed live online.
