Safety and security of tourists of “paramount importance”

A meeting between the Secretary of State for Tourism Rita Marques and the president of Safe Communities, David Thomas, was an opportunity to discuss the safety and security of tourists in Portugal.

At the meeting held in Lisbon on January 14, Safe Communities briefed the Secretary of State on its work in helping the various government authorities concerning the safety and security of the many tourists who visit Portugal each year.

Rita Marques stressed the importance of this work as safety was an important factor when choosing a holiday destination. The meeting discussed the progress of a number of ongoing projects and the development of new ones, forming the basis of future collaboration.

The Secretary of State assumed her new post on October 26, 2019, having previously worked as president of venture capital firm Portugal Ventures.

She was president of the Supervisory Board of the Youth Foundation from 2017 to 2019 and has developed several consultancy works with public and private entities in the areas of innovation, public financing, internationalization and foreign direct investment.

She took over from her predecessor Ana Godinho, who was promoted and is now Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security.

Portugal is currently the third most peaceful country, according to the latest Global Peace Index, and has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe.
