Safer taxis

AROUND 200 taxis in Lisbon will soon have a permanent link to the police with the new safe taxi programme, increasing the number of vehicles with this security equipment to 1,000.

The equipment allows the police to track taxis using GSM and GPS technology when the driver activates an alarm.

Installation of the system costs 139 euros (plus VAT), 33 per cent of which will be paid by the Ministry of Internal Administration and 27 per cent of which is paid for by Lisbon Câmara, while taxi drivers pay the remaining amount.
