Russian spending spree

The English were the nationality who spent the most at Portuguese airports during Euro 2004, but it was the Russians who broke the record for a single day’s spending. At Faro airport alone, Russian fans spent 310,000 euros in the course of one day.

In total, the Russian fans spent 630,000 euros at the three Portuguese airports (Lisbon, Porto and Faro) on the day of their return home after losing to the Greeks, the eventual winners of the competition.

A total of one million euros was spent during Euro 2004 at Portuguese airports, an impressive sum when one considers that 2.3 million euros was spent at airports throughout last year. Car hire companies also registered significant spending boosts.
