Delivery is 4th consignment of Russian gas purchased by Portugal THIS YEAR
A new cargo of Russian gas it due to be received in Sines port this afternoon.
The LNG gas tanker Merak is expected to arrive “around 3pm”, according to information on the APS Ports administrative site.
According to Expresso, this is the 4th delivery of Russian gas to Portugal this year. This is because gas, as opposed to oil, is not included in the sanctions imposed on Russia by the European Union in the wake of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine almost exactly 20 months ago.
The paper adds that Russia is the 3rd largest gas supplier to Portugal – America and Nigeria being the first and second.
Last month, the Liberal Initiative (IL) sent a question to the Minister for the Environment and Climate Action, Duarte Cordeiro, about the continued imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia.
On August 30, Jornal de Negócios reported that by June this year, national imports of Russian liquefied natural gas had grown to almost 200 million cubic metres.
