Running for beginners

WHILE SHIRLEY Emílio and Amanda Mortimer are organising and training for their charity run across the Algarve in May, a running group is being formed to train for the final 10km part of the run, which is open to the public.

The first meeting of the running group, organised by Sue’s Road Runners in association with the charity run organisers 2girls2run, is on January 16 outside Silves Municipal Swimming Pool, at 7.30pm.

There are no fees to join the group and it is designed to encourage beginners to run and keep fit. The goal is for the group to run at least 5km of the final 10km.

There are also discussions that a second running group will meet at Barringtons in Vale do Lobo, but details have yet to be confirmed.

The run across the Algarve, in aid of local children’s charity ACCA and the UK’s Jane’s Appeal, will have many highlights for Shirley and Amanda but both said that the part they are most looking forward to is the last 10km.

Amanda said: “We will be running with folks from all walks of life, ages, shapes and sizes and that is what this is all about, bringing people together for a healthier life”.

“I am looking forward especially to the last 10km and everyone joining and participating, being out in the open air, surrounded by great people and raising as much money for the charities as possible”, said Shirley.
