Victory in the latest 100m Golden League event in Zurich ahead of the Olympics has made Jamaica’s Asafa Powell favourite for the high-profile race. The 21-year-old student had already left three-time world champion and Sydney gold medal winner Maurice Greene in his wake in London the previous week, recording a time of 9.91 seconds, despite easing up in the final yards on a new and therefore slow track. Powell, unbeaten this year, already showed promise at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, before a false start cost him his place in the semi-final line-up.
