Rhino Shoot
Hull ended a 23-year wait by wresting the Challenge Cup from the Leeds Rhinos grasp by the narrowest of margins in Cardiff. Giant loose forward, Paul Cooke, crashed over the line in the 79th minute to edge his team ahead 25-24 and hand the underdogs an unlikely victory. The first half ended level at 6-6 and when Keith Senior, clearly unfit, had been replaced by Cliff McKenna, Hull surged into a 19-12 lead. But Mark Calderwood struck back, rounding the Hull defence to narrow the gap to one point following Sinfield’s conversion. Four minutes later, the Rhinos were ahead but then came Cooke. The Leeds, Bradford, and Saints stranglehold on the competition had finally been broken.
