Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie Rhys Jones, the Countess of Wessex, were in the Algarve recently to take part in the ‘Duke of Edinburgh Cup’ golf tournament and to celebrate the official opening of the Victoria Golf Club in Vilamoura.
The annual competition is part of the International Golf for Young circuit, which raises funds to help children and young adults to achieve their goals in life via the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, known in Portugal as the ‘Prémio Infante D. Henrique’. Last year’s competition raised 75,000 euros in contributions from participants and sponsors. This year, over 80 Portuguese and foreign golfers turned up for the event, which was organised by Lusotur Golf SA. After two days of hard fought competition, José Carlos Pereira Coelho and Maria Isabel Moya Nunes da Silva were announced as the tournament winners.
