THE HOTEL Garbe in Armação de Pêra was the setting last month for the Annual General Meeting of the Royal British Legion (Algarve sub-branch), after which members enjoyed a convivial lunch.
The outgoing chairman John Harwood reported the success of the 2005 Poppy Appeal, which raised 10,238 euros, and gave a brief report on the success of the social events over the last 12 months. Outgoing membership secretary, Harry Warner, reported membership in the Algarve had grown rapidly over the last year and was now up to 143 members. Des Briggs, the welfare co-ordinator, spoke of the several members that RBL had been able to assist and how he would like to increase the already active support given to members in need in Portugal.
Geoffrey Smith was re-elected as secretary and membership secretary, while Des Briggs will continue as the welfare officer.
Michael York and Eddy De Bie agreed to assist with organising social events and Peter Wilkinson was elected as chairman.
The new chairman expressed the members’ thanks and appreciation to John Harwood and Harry Warner for all their efforts over the last five years. He also thanked Lynn Harwood and Esme Warner for all that they had undertaken on behalf of the Royal British Legion in the Algarve.
The monthly lunch presently held on the third Wednesday of each month at the Hotel Garbe will recommence in September. Details of a visit to a local vineyard in May will be circulated to all members and included on the RBL website in due course with details also being published in the press.
