Rotary lunch in aid of victim support

Almancil International Rotary Club (AIRC) is celebrating International Women’s Day earlier, on Saturday, March 3, with a fundraising lunch and fashion show at the Conrad Algarve Hotel in Quinta do Lago, from 12 noon.

All proceeds raised from the event will go to victim support association APAV, which provides safe houses and assistance for women who have suffered domestic abuse, together with their children, and women who have been trafficked into Portugal.

The association receives a limited amount of funding from the government but is desperately short of clothing, food, and basic toiletries for the women and equipment for the safe houses, located primarily in the Algarve.

AIRC President Claire Busbridge said: “We hope to raise a considerable amount of money to help these vulnerable women to enjoy a better existence. In the past, we have supported disadvantaged children and the elderly but International Women’s Day (March 8) gives us the opportunity to do something specifically for women.”

Speakers will include Katharina Schlaipfer, General Manager, Conrad Algarve, Claire Busbridge and Ana Paula Marques, a local business owner.

The women’s and men’s fashion show is being organised by Helen Foster of the Cotton Lovers Outlet in Almancil.

Entertainment will be provided by award-winning accordionist Rodrigo Veloso.

Price is €40 for a three-course meal, including drinks.
