Members and friends of Rotary Club Estoi Palace International visited the Banco Alimentar Contra A Fome (Food Bank) in Faro recently to view the portable digital scales donated by the club as part of its ongoing support of the cause.
The Banco Alimentar serves 75 charitable organisations across the Algarve and provides food parcels to more than 16,000 people each month.
Staffed entirely by volunteers, the Faro-based agency has recently opened a satellite warehouse facility in Portimão, greatly reducing the amount of time and transportation necessary to complete its monthly objectives.
Since 2009, Estoi Palace Rotary have supplemented the monthly allotments to participants that are part of the Casa do Povo programme in Estoi and have purchased and distributed nearly 17,000 litres of milk as of July 2012.
During the current Rotary year, the Estoi Club, together with the newly formed Rotarian’s Wine Appreciation Fellowship, have applied for a matching grant with Rotary clubs in Grapevine, Texas, USA and Texas Rotary District 5790. This grant will be used to purchase a refrigerated lorry for the food bank, allowing the agency to collect perishable food from area supermarkets.
