Rotary Club looks ahead after busy May

May was a busy and rewarding month for the Rotary Club of Silves.

The club welcomed a team of young professionals from Alabama, USA, all with different professional backgrounds.

Molly (team leader and Rotarian in Alabama), April, Justin and Cody spent the day visiting local companies in line with their professions and seeing parts of the Algarve which were of interest to them. Erin spent her day with a member of the Rotary Club of Portimão.

Molly, who took a degree in journalism and now has her own PR company, spent the day with Sheena Rawcliffe (Algarve Resident) and Debbie Gaines (Open Media/Essential publications).

In the evening, Rotarians from several clubs across the Algarve, along with the five visitors from Alabama, joined with Rotary Club of Portimão to celebrate RC Portimão’s 50th anniversary.

The following day RC Silves hosted a classical concert at the Casa da Cultura Islâmica e Mediterrânica in Silves. The audience was welcomed by members of RC Silves with a glass of wine and canapés in the lovely garden of the Casa da Cultura.

The TenHagen String Quartet played pieces by Haydn, Schubert, Stravinsky and Bartholdy to a full house. This amazingly talented quartet of siblings enthralled the audience with their passion for music and their beautiful interpretations.

Thanks to the generosity of Silves Câmara and RC Silves members who provided the refreshments, proceeds from donations made at the concert will go to the RC Silves Scholarship Fund to aid deserving local students who otherwise may be prevented from going on to further education.

Meeting at the Holiday Inn in Armação de Pêra is the ideal venue for RC Silves to attract visiting Rotarians and May saw members from the UK, Germany and America.

Bill McDill from the USA joined RC Silves for a lunch meeting and regaled those present with anecdotes from his many decades of years as a Rotarian.

Annual conference

During the month of May, Rotary International held its annual conference and this year Bangkok was the venue. RC President Isabel Flores attended the conference and made many new Rotarian friends, who we look forward to welcoming to Portugal in 2013 when Portugal hosts the International Conference.

The month of May closed with a joint meeting between RC Silves and Almancil International Rotary Club, at which Constantino Jordan was the guest speaker.

Constantino enthused members of both clubs and their friends with his ideas on how best to market the Algarve as a place to live, work and retire.

He also spoke of the development The Residences at Victoria Clube de Golfe, which is a closed condominium in Vilamoura ideally suited to those looking for comfort, security and enjoyment.

Constantino answered questions from the floor and finished by reminding all those present that they could make a difference by sharing their enjoyment of living in the Algarve with others, through their websites, Facebook pages and other social networking opportunities.

RC Silves meets each Thursday at the Holiday Inn Armação de Pêra at 1pm. Last Thursday of each month is a dinner meeting at 7pm.
