Rotarians raise record amount with Cool Manouche concert

Saturday was a night to remember at the Mascarenhas Gregório Theatre in Silves which had a full house for the Rotary Silves’ eighth charity concert. This time it was performed by Cool Manouche + Betty M who rewarded the packed audience with an evening of their special brand of Gypsy Jazz.

This lively style of jazz was started by the Romany gypsy Django Reinhardt in the swinging Paris bars and clubs of the 1930s and remains popular to this day.

Django was almost certainly looking down on the players Betty M, Ray Bartlett, Luís Fialho and Rick Steffens, and smiled on them – the quality of their playing was that good.

This was a charity concert and the record takings of €3,800 were donated to Casa do Povo in Messines to purchase the equipment and resources necessary to educate adults and children with learning difficulties.

Thanks went to the concert sponsors Blevins Franks and Câmara de Silves for allowing use of the theatre free of charge.
