Ronaldo tops list of world’s highest-paid athletes

Just days after celebrating his third Champions League win with Real Madrid in four years, Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has once again topped Forbes’ ranking of highest-paid athletes in the world with a yearly income of over €82 million.

According to the magazine’s annual study, CR7 earned over €51 million in salary income and €31 million in endorsements last year.

The footballer edged out NBA basketball idol LeBron James, who took home around €76.5 million, and his Argentine rival Lionel Messi, who totalled €71 million.

Swiss tennis icon Roger Federer is fourth with just under €57 million in pay, followed by another NBA superstar Kevin Durant who earned around €54 million.

The top 10 also features American footballer Andrew Luck (€44 million), golfer Rory McIlroy (€44 million), basketball players Stephen Curry (€42 million) and James Harden (€41 million) and finally Formula 1 racer Lewis Hamilton (nearly €41 million).

American tennis legend Serena Williams is the only woman on the list, placing 51st with earnings of €24 million.

The list of best-paid athletes consists of players from 11 different sports. Most of them play in the NBA (32), followed by baseball (22), American football (15) and football (nine).
