Portugal won its first match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar today, beating Ghana by 3-2 to climb to first place of Group H.
Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player ever to score in five different World Cups after converting a penalty on the 65th minute of action after a goalless first half.
Andre Ayew scored an equalising goal eight minutes later, but two goals in two minutes by João Félix and Rafael Leão gave Portugal what should have been a comfortable 3-1 lead with 10 minutes to play.
However, Ghana refused to throw in the towel and was able to cut the lead to just one goal with a header by Osman Bukari just one minute before stoppage time.
There was still a moment of panic as Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa failed to notice that Iñaki Williams was behind him as he placed the ball on the ground, but the African forward slipped as he tried to score the equaliser.
Portugal’s next match is against Uruguay on Monday.
