Portugal may have beat Cameroon by 5-1 last night (Thursday) in a friendly match, but all eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo, who had the chance to become the national team’s top scorer if he scored at least one goal against the African side. He did.
His historic goal came during the 21st minute, after a great sideline pass by right-full back João Pereira.
In his usually classy manner, CR7 shimmied past a defender at the entrance of the box and fired a defenceless low shot, putting him one goal ahead of former Portuguese striker Pauleta in the national overall tally.
“I don’t worry about breaking records, it is something that happens naturally, with a lot of effort, dedication, with the excellent national team we have, a good coach … I knew that sooner or later it would happen,” the 29-year-old football star told RTP after the match.
Cameroon star Aboubakar was still able to level the scoreboard before half-time, but Portugal put on a top performance in the second-half, scoring four unreturned goals, including yet another for Ronaldo.
Raul Meireles, Fábio Coentrão and Edinho also placed their name on the scoreboard, in a match that saw the national team debut of Benfica winger Ivan Cavaleiro and SC Braga midfielder Rafa.
