A 35-year-old Romanian man drowned on Sunday (November 12) at the Funcho dam in São Bartolomeu de Messines, Silves.
The fishing trip turned to tragedy when the man disappeared from sight after deciding to go swimming while fishing with friends and family.
A witness told CMTV that his uncle tried to stop him as the man had been eating and drinking, but he replied: “No one tells me what to do.”
His body was found hours later by a diver.
Rescue operations involved firefighters from Portimão, Lagoa, Albufeira and São Bartolomeu de Messines, the National Emergency Medical Institute (INEM) and GNR police.
The body was transported to Portimão Hospital’s office of legal medicine to undergo an autopsy.
