Robert “not capable of hurting anyone” says wife

THE ESTRANGED wife of Robert Murat has said he was “not capable of hurting anybody”.

Dawn Murat, of Hockering, Norfolk, in England said in an interview with regional television station Anglia TV she had “no doubt at all” that Robert Murat was innocent.

“He is not a person to do this,” she said. “He is the most helpful and genuine person I have ever met. I’m absolutely disgusted by what people are saying. It is absolute total shock and disbelief. I feel he has been made a scapegoat.”

The couple have a four-year-old daughter – the same age as Madeleine – and Mrs Murat said her estranged husband was devoted to the youngster.

Mr Murat has been interviewed and later named as the first arguido or suspect in the hunt for Madeleine.

• Mr Murat has denied there was anything sinister in his hiring a car two days after she vanished. Staff at a car rental firm in Praia da Luz grew suspicious about Robert Murat and reported him to the police. Documents show he hired a Hyundai Getz for four days until Tuesday of last week.
