Roaring success

Rory McIlroy lived up to his billing as golf’s next big star by achieving his breakthrough professional victory at the weekend’s Dubai Desert Classic.

The Northern Ireland teenager, who is now ranked 14th in the world, took a half-way lead at the European Tour event before seeing off the persistent challenges of Henrik Stenson, Robert Karlsson, Paul Casey, Martin Kaymer and ultimately Justin Rose.

Earlier Colin Montgomerie was confirmed as Europe’s next Ryder Cup captain during which McIlroy will no doubt play a major role.
