Road tolls increase in 2009

The cost of motorway tolls rose in Portugal on January 1, by an average of 2.2 per cent, with the highest increases for cars being on bridge crossings.

Crossing the Vasco da Gama bridge in Lisbon will now cost 10 cents more for cars, having increased from 2.25 to 2.35 euros.

The 25 de Abril bridge, also in the capital, will also cost an extra five cents for cars, increasing from 1.30 to 1.35 euros.

A road trip between Lisbon and the Algarve will now cost 19.75 euros for cars, while travelling from the capital to the northern city of Porto will cost 19.55, representing an increase of 45 cents.

The government has said that only 42.76 per cent of the country’s motorways and bridges with tolls have had price revisions, while the rest will keep the same as 2008.
