ROAD TAX (Imposto Municipal Sobre Veículos), which this year saw an increase of two per cent, can be purchased as from May 23, from Finanças (tax offices), selected papelarias (paper shops), the Automóvel Clube de Portugal (automobile club of Portugal) and from Juntas de Freguesia (parish council offices).
Between May 23 and June 15, owners of cars, motorbikes, light aircraft and leisure boats must acquire the tax stamp that corresponds to the payment of the relevant Imposto Municipal Sobre Veículos for 2005.
The amount due depends on the type of vehicle, fuel used, engine size and year of registration. See table for 2005 prices. Ownership documents and the owner’s número de contribuinte (tax number) must be presented when purchasing the tax stamp. The stamp must be clearly displayed on the right side of the vehicle’s windscreen, with the information facing outwards. Failure to pay this tax will result in a heavy fine.
