Road fund tax increases could reach 230%

According to SIC Notícias today, the government’s determination to get people to scrap their old cars has led to a plan to increase the road fund tax on vehicles pre-dating 2007 by as much as 230%. Says the station, this could see drivers forking out over €200 more a year than they do now. This is one of the many tax hikes that will ‘fill the gap’ created by income tax cuts. That is, if it passes: already over 51,000 people have signed a petition decrying this proposal (for all their reasons, see top story to follow).
