Road authority finally admits to motorway “toll mistake”

The new president of national road authority Estradas de Portugal has finally admitted that setting up toll gantries on Portuguese highways – such as the Algarve’s A22 – was “a mistake”. After years of angry protests from drivers, António Ramalho went as far as calling the move “destructive from a marketing point of view”, and said that while it is vital to find a new model soon, EP doesn’t want to make the same mistake twice by rushing a major decision. But the “user-pays” approach will continue, he confirmed.
