Nine deaths, 24 people injured and 768 traffic accidents was the toll on Portugal’s roads last weekend, when most people were either returning from or starting their holidays.
According to data from the PSP and GNR police, in the first quarter of August 63 people died on national roads, an average of three deaths per day, a number that is expected to rise until the end of the month.
In August 2008, 90 people died on the roads in Portugal.
Lisbon, Setúbal, Porto and Santarém registered the most road-related deaths.
