A project to recuperate 16 hectares of land overlooking the Ria Formosa and turn it into a large leisure park at a cost of €3.5 million is expected to be completed by the beginning of next year.
It will be located between the Teatro Municipal de Faro and the area of Montenegro and the work is to be carried out by the company Oliveiras SA in conjunction with Polis Litoral Ria Formosa SA.
The park, called Parque Ribeirinho de Faro, will feature various squares, an open-air theatre with capacity for 250 spectators, walkways and cycling paths, observatories for bird-watching, and a maintenance department.
Teresa Correia, of the Faro muncipal authority, which is responsible for the idea, said: “ It is an opportunity to recuperate the environmental character of the area and convert it into a venue for the enjoyment and wellbeing of everyone.”
She said that the economic considerations of the land, which comes under the jurisdiction of the maritime authorities, is already under way.
