Over 900 athletes to take part
Portimão will host the second edition of the Basket Youth Festival from July 6 to 9, which will bring over 900 athletes representing 67 teams from 20 clubs to the Algarve.
The teams, featuring under-eight to under-16 players, will be travelling from nearly every region in Portugal as well as from Andalusia in Spain.
The tournament will also feature around 100 technical and logistical support staff, including referees, coaches, and club officials, alongside family members and friends of the youth basketball players.
Two-hundred games and eight finals are scheduled to take place across the Boavista, Gimnodesportivo, Bemposta school, Martinho Castelo Branco and Pontal sports pavilions.
All participants will take part in a parade through Portimão on July 7, followed by the opening ceremony at 10.30pm at the town’s riverside area near Portimão Museum.
Baskey Youth Festival is organised by Portimonense Sporting Clube under the technical direction of coach Nuno Martins and is backed by Portimão Council and the Portuguese Basketball Federation.
The organisers’ goal is to “provide all participants with memorable days of sports and social interaction, through the sharing of different experiences among children, young people, coaches, officials, and accompanying individuals.”
Founded in 1914, Portimonense started its basketball activities in the 1930s. Currently, it is one of the clubs with the most athletes and has been promoted to the top-tier Liga Portuguesa Betclic in the upcoming sports season.
