The Algarve Riding Club’s first outing in 2004 – a showjumping event at Quinta do Lago Riding Centre – proved to be a great success. Club members enjoyed fine weather, a good turnout and a well-constructed course, designed by Major Pombeiro, with a new set of jumps built by Martin Dickinson. There were 50 entries during the day, ranging from pre-debutante class (max. 50cm) to an intermediate class of 105cm. There was also a fun class of Pairs’ Competition to finish off the day with a smile on everyone’s face. The judge of the day was Manuel B. Costeira, who was widely praised for being patient and supportive to all the competitors.
Importantly for the club, Casa & Jardim, Ultimate Look and Rob Cawley sponsored three of the jumps on the course, while EquiLoulé, an equestrian shop in Loulé, also contributed to the event. Sponsorship is an integral and important part of the club’s wellbeing and the committee welcome any future sponsors. The ARC’s next event, a dressage competition, will also be held at Quinta do Lago Riding Centre on Sunday February 29. O Cantinho do Tobias, an equestrian shop in Quarteira, will be the main sponsor for the day. The Algarve Riding Club is not just about the competitions for its members. It is also very proactive in the welfare of horses in general in the Algarve. In 2002 alone, members sheltered three very thin and weary mares and two foals. With a lot of help and support from generous horse lovers, the animals were vaccinated and cared for until they were in a fit condition to go to new loving homes.
