Ria Formosa is considered to be one of the seven Natural Wonders of Portugal, which will strengthen the potential for nature tourism such as bird watching in the Algarve, says the Algarve Tourism Board’s president.
This area of the eastern Algarve received the most votes in the category of marine areas in Portugal, which will give a “breath of fresh air to this sector” says Nuno Aires.
“This distinction shows the recognition of the Portuguese about this landscape. I believe that this nomination will give a fresh impetus to nature tourism in the Algarve, a product that we have been working on in recent years and will also help the preservation of Ria Formosa,” he said.
Ria Formosa is a vast ecosystem of unique ecological characteristics that spans an area of about 20,000 hectares and 60 kilometres of coastline, and is the third most important wetland of the country.
