Ria de Alvor dredging

Dear Editor,

Marine engineering works to deepen the Ria de Alvor is a welcome boost for tourism boat traffic visiting Alvor.

However, the estimated 240,000 cubic metres of dredged sediment is the critical project component that needs important attention.

Both Alvor and Meia Praia beaches do not need widening with additional poor grade quality sand, nor does the inside entrance need infilling to create additional beach space. Furthermore, dumping at sea is illegal under EU Directives, so would the Ministry of the Sea please inform the public what their on/off site disposal assessment is and whether it will be realistically finished by the summer.
