Reward offered over monument vandalism

A fire chief in the castle-town district of Santa Maria da Feira, Aveiro, is offering a €5,000 reward, from his own pocket, for information leading to the detention of vandals who wrecked a monument to dead firemen.

“I will give €5,000 from my own pocket,” Joaquim Cardoso, president of the Lourosa Bombeiros told Correio da Manhã newspaper, describing the “very well-planned crime by someone who knows the fire-station”.

The monument, which had been only hours from its inauguration, was badly damaged after a false alarm of a forest fire nearby sent firefighters out in force, leaving the station manned only by the telephonist.

The event took place two years ago, but the firemen are clearly determined to get to the bottom of it.
