Revenue down

Less tobacco was bought in Portugal in 2009 compared to the previous year, according to the Finanças, the national tax and finance office.

The Finanças received around 93 million euros less in tax between January and November in 2009 than during the first 11 months of 2008, the year in which the new smoking laws came into effect.

This trend is expected to continue this year, with tobacco tax revenue decreasing for the government, despite tax on tobacco increasing in Portugal by 1.4 per cent in 2009.
