Red Squirrel

Return of the Red Squirrel

Not seen in Portugal for “hundreds of years”, the red squirrel is at last making a major comeback, and has now been registered in various parts of the north and centre of the country.
The good news comes from biologist Rita Gomes from the University of Aveiro.
“There are even cases of it being found almost as far down the country as the Tejo,” she said.
The red squirrel came in from Galicia where it began to repopulate the countryside in the 80s.
