Portuguese hoping to retire next year will have to work ‘another month’ as the age for access to State pensions is to increase next year to 66 years and 7 months as opposed to the 66 years and 6 months currently stipulated. The announcement in Diário da República today adds that ‘early retirement’ requested this year will also be subject to a 15.5% cut. Experts however have told Expresso that the retirement age should fall in 2023 “due to the reduction in life expectancy after 65 as a consequence of increased mortality caused both directly and indirectly by the Covid-19 pandemic”.
