Under the motto Evitar a cegueira evitável, Melhorar a visão (avoid preventable blindness, improve the vision), the day of the retina will be marked for the first time in the Algarve, between September 29 and October 2.
Organised by the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve (ARS) and the Association for Retinopathy of Portugal, the event includes an awareness campaign, prevention and early detection of age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and poor vision. There will be an art exhibition, workshops, a lecture and eye tests available. Children will receive free eye tests, a pilot project for this age group.
Among the scheduled activities, eyes tests will also be carried on adults aged 45 and over on October 1 at Continente supermarket in Portimão and on October 2 in Faro Municipal market.
These tests will be done by orthoptic technicians and analysed by Faro hospital ophthalmologists.. The completion of these tests is intended to contribute to an early diagnosis of AMD and for the correct routing of the patient in case of sickness.
