A SHADOW of its former glory, the Palácio do Egypt, in the heart of Oeiras historic centre, presently stands in a state of advanced decay. But not for much longer…
Speaking at the Galeria Municipal Verney just a stone’s throw away, Câmara President Teresa Zambujo announced the renovation of the 18th century building, once the pride of the locality and the most important building in the region, until the construction of the Palácio dos Marqueses. Once renovated, the Palácio will be used for exhibitions and cultural events, and will include shops, a multimedia centre and a restaurant with an esplanade. According to the câmara’s office of special municipal projects, “the strategy behind the renovation is aimed at the promotion of the county through the promulgation of craftsmanship, heritage and local culture. We hope that the space will be a focal point for socio-cultural activities (exhibitions, meetings and conferences).”
