Restaurant review: Aurora by Vitor Veloso

It all starts with a dream…

Every worthwhile venture starts with a dream; and Vitor Veloso’s dream started when he promised his Grandmother Aurora that one day she would have a restaurant named after her. Finally, Vitor’s dream has been realised.

Aurora by Vitor Veloso is an eclectic mix of old Portuguese charm with modern chic, conveniently located in the old quarter of Loulé, a stone’s throw away from the municipal market.

Eat alfresco on the small front outside terrace or inside as the temperature cools. Armed with the skills and expertise learned from working in some of the finest restaurants in the region, including the Conrad Algarve, owner/chef Vitor has created a menu that would tantalise the most demanding of tastebuds.

Using only the finest quality and freshest local produce from the Algarve hills and the Ria Formosa, Vitor creates traditional authentic seasonal Portuguese dishes, all with an explosion of flavours.

All tastes are catered for; choose from a selection of starters, like coast shrimp, with green apple and cucumber gazpacho, the writer’s choice. For fish mains, try the catch of the day. For meat lovers, the black pork, also the writer’s choice, or duck or succulent steak. There is also a vegetarian option.

Every week, Vitor changes the choice of “Cataplana” (Portuguese stew, usually seafood, cooked in a traditional vessel), and prices adapt with what is offered.

Starters start from €7 with mains starting at €14 for the vegetarian option. Finish the meal with one of the delightful homemade desserts.

There is a carefully selected comprehensive wine list to complement every dish.

“Tudo começa com um sonho, um novo dia, um novo renascer”
(It all starts with a dream, a new day, a new rebirth)

“Sonhar grande, trabalhar com alma e acreditar”
(Dream big, work with soul and believe)

Open for lunch and dinner with an additional selected tourist menu. Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 12.15pm to 3pm and 7.15pm to 10pm; Mondays from 7.15pm to 10pm. Closed on Sunday. Reservations highly recommended.
