Residents help save fishermen in danger

Four Algarve Resident readers helped in a rescue of two fishermen on January 21 after they called the emergency services when they saw an upturned boat off the coast between Marinha and Benagil.

David and Sue Price and Roger and Jenny Knight (pictured) told the Algarve Resident: “We were watching the coastline when we saw the boat overturn.”

The four members of the Camping and Caravan Club, who were staying at Camping Albufeira, added that they reported the incident to 112 emergency services at 11.15am and the fishermen were rescued 15 minutes later by a lifeboat rescue team.

One of the fishermen, António Correia, told Correio da Manhã newspaper: “The waves were too strong and about three metres high. The boat upturned and we waited for help on top of it, but we couldn’t wait much longer because we were freezing.”

The Maritime Police helped in the rescue operation while the boat was towed to Portimão port for repair works.
