Residents brave cold sea for charity

Dozens of foreign residents participated in the Annual Swim for Shoes on Christmas Day on Armação de Pêra beach.

The event, which will be repeated tomorrow (Saturday) at 11am in front of the Holiday Inn Algarve (formerly the Hotel Garbe), hopes to attract another good crowd, in the effort to raise money to buy new shoes for children in an Algarve orphanage.

On Christmas Day, despite early morning torrential rain, more than 50 people took part in the swim either by paddling or getting totally immersed in the sea.

Adding to the excitement were the film crews and journalists from SIC, RTP, Agência Lusa and Algarve Mais, who filmed the event and interviewed a number of participants.

Father Christmas was represented, who after singing We wish you a Merry Christmas and A Todos um Bom Natal ran down to the waiting sea.

Certificates were awarded to all those who got wet and everyone enjoyed a glass of mulled wine at the hotel’s bar afterwards.

Vicki Good from the Holiday Inn Algarve told the Algarve Resident: “We would like say a big thank you to everyone who participated.

“The New Year’s Day swim is just the way to recover from the festivities of New Year’s Eve and welcome in 2011! Fancy dress is optional.”
