A REPLICA of the famous Spanish schooner Amistad, which transported slaves from West Africa to the Americas, was in Lisbon last week.
Marking 200 years since the abolition of slavery, the ship has been moored up at the Doca da Rocha do Conde de Óbidos docks since October 13.
During its stay in Lisbon, the Amistad was visited by school children and the general public until October 21, when it set sail for its next port of call – Madeira.
During its two-week stay, conferences on slavery, which were open to the public, were held on board the ship.
In December the Amistad will arrive in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where many of the slaves came from, which will also be a symbolic moment in the voyage.
