Renowned Russian musicians to perform at Os Agostos

Cellist Mikhail Shumov and violinist Zachary Spontak will give two recitals this month in the Marquee at Os Agostos country estate near Santa Bárbara de Nexe.
The first recital on Tuesday, October 20 will feature music by J.S. Bach and N. Paganini. The second recital on Thursday, October 22 will have music by J.S. Bach, A. Piatti, J. Corigliano and M. Ravel.

Mikhail Shumov was born in Moscow where he studied with Zoia Kuimova and Igor Gavrysh. In 2012, he graduated with distinction from London’s Royal College of Music and where he was awarded a major prize at the RCM Cello Competition.

He has competed in many international competitions and been awarded several prizes. These include first prize in the International “Teacher and Student” competition in 2000. He also won the first prize at the “Premio Citta Di Padova” International Competition in Italy in 2008. Mikhail has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Russia, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Austria, Spain, Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere. In Canada he has participated in the Banff Summer Arts Festival. He joined the Orquestra Classical do Sul in 2013, where he is the principal cellist. He is teaching in the Francisco Rosado Conservatory of Music in Loulé. He lives in Faro with his wife pianist Joanna Viera Shumova.

Zachary Spontak is the new concert master of the Orquestra Clássica do Sul. Zachary has been called a “natural leader” and has collaborated with such well known musicians as Itzhak Perelman, Midori and Sir Simon Rattle. He has won First Prize at the Carnegie Hall Global Music Partnership, Pro Artists International Competition and Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. He has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, and Fairbanks Symphony among others.

Zachary engages in musical outreach programs realising that many young people do not have access to a structured musical education. From 2016-18 he worked in Buenos Aires performing and teaching in disadvantaged area of the city. Zachary is a teaching artist with “Musaid”, an organisation that connects musicians around the world through educational exchanges. He was Director of Education at the Anchorage Chamber Music Festival and was involved in bringing artists and students together for intensive learning and performing each summer in Anchorage. Zachary has a Master of Performance from the Royal College of Music gained under the mentorship of renowned violinist Detlef Hahn. Zachary and his wife, Luísa, a classical singer, recently arrived in Portugal and live in Faro.

These Amigos de Música concerts at Os Agostos will take place in the marquee and will begin at 7pm sharp. Doors open at 6pm. There will be a table plan and wine, fruit juices and canapés will be laid out on tables. Entry donation is €25 per person for guests and non-members payable in advance by bank transfer (see website).

The AMIGOS DE MÚSICA is an international group of around 90 members who stage musical activities by internationally renowned musicians and also sponsor young Portuguese musicians. It is a non-profit organization and is in its 30th. year
