Remembrance Services led by the St Vincent’s Anglican Church of the Algarve will be held on Sunday, with the main one being at St. Luke’s Church, Monte da Palhagueira, starting at 10.50am.
Wreaths will be laid by Kate Christie, Second Secretary, on behalf of the British Ambassador to Portugal, and members of the Royal British Legion.
There will also be a Remembrance Service at Praia da Luz Church at noon and an evening service in Tavira, at the Nossa Senhora do Carmo Chapel at the Hotel Vila Galé Albacora, from 6pm.
The Royal British Legion (RBL) Poppy Appeal coordinator for Portugal, Sandra Wilkinson, told the Algarve Resident: “At Remembrance tide the British community throughout the world remember those who died for the freedom that we enjoy today and the visible representation of that Remembrance is the wearing of a Poppy and the keeping of the Two Minute Silence at 11am on November 11.
“Last year the Legion distributed £1.4 million per week to ex-servicemen and women and their families so we indeed stand shoulder to shoulder with all who serve, and have served, their country.”
Sandra Wilkinson would also like to thank those in Portugal who give freely of their time to help the Appeal by distributing and selling poppies. “Last year, the Portugal Branch raised €32,000 and we could not do it without our volunteers.”
