Religious festival

ALTURA PARISH council in Castro Marim starts its weekend-long catholic celebrations today (Friday, May 30), including a religious procession as well as an arts and crafts fair, children’s party and cycling competition.

This festival, in honour of the sacred heart of Mary, Coração Imaculado de Maria, will start tonight at 7pm with music from the Banda Musical Castromarinence and the opening of the arts and crafts fair.

Tonight’s festivities will end with musical performances by the folk ranch of Azinhal, followed by a ballroom dance performance by the Grupo de Salão da Sociedade Recreativa Musical Luzense and a concert by Portuguese singer Rosinha.

A cycling competition will take place tomorrow in Altura. This will be separated into two stages, the first starting at 11.30am and the second at 5pm.

A recital will be held at Altura church from 4.30pm, before the Eucharist at 5pm. This will be followed by the religious procession along the main streets of Altura at 6pm. Portuguese singer Pedro Khima will be performing the evening concert tomorrow, followed by a fireworks display.

On Sunday, Castro Marim will be celebrating international children’s day with a children’s activity party between 4pm and 9pm. This will include bouncy castles, trampolines, face painting, magicians, an appearance from the cartoon character Noddy and much more.

These celebrations will finish on Sunday night with two traditional Portuguese music concerts, the first of which starts at 9.30pm. All of the activities will take place in the main car park in Altura, near the Alagoa beach.
