Religious Easter procession

The villagers of Garvão in the Alentejo re-enacted the betrayal of Christ, his trial, humiliation and crucifixion on Good Friday, April 10.

Starting at Café Nascer do Sol, at the top of the village, the actors and congregation marched through the streets to the church where following the crucifixion, the body of Christ is laid down.

The principle characters of this religious re-enactment were mainly young people from the village as well as family members who returned for the celebrations.

According to Algarve Resident contributor Jeannette Kempson, who lives in the Alentejo region, “this annual procession is a very moving experience, even if you are not religious”.
