THE WINTER programme of activitiy courses at the Hotel Garbe commenced this week. The courses are open to residents, visiting family, friends and hotel guests. There are still a few places available for November courses.
• Introduction to Portuguese wine course
A team of wine buffs from WineMine, an established local wine company, will guide you through the two, four hour session course on November 13 and 14. The course will teach the finer points of Portuguese wines, a brief history of Portuguese wine making, tasting techniques, tips for enjoying wine, Portuguese table wines, districts and grapes, as well as information about Port and Madeira. Each day you will be tasting the wines on their own and then with lunch, giving you a chance to put your new skills to the test. At 105 euros per person, including wine tasting, two lunches and a course certificate, this course is one not to be missed.
• Painting course
Beginner or experienced artists will benefit from these painting courses on November 13, 14, 15 and 16. Guided by the experienced instructor, Manuela Vale, each three hour session will be on a one to one basis. Special attention will be placed on perspective, hue, colour temperature and above all, light. The four day course costs180 euros per person. If you choose to have materials included (canvas board, and acrylics) an additional 20 euros will be charged.
• Creative writing course
If you enjoy writing, and would like to learn creative writing for profit or pleasure, this is the course for you. Jenny Grainer, a professional journalist, will help you to enhance your writing skills – start that book or record your memoirs for future generations to remember you. The course consists of four, three hour sessions on November 13, 14, 16 and 17 and costs 125 euros per person.
